WHY IT BELONGS IN THE CONVERSATION

A celebrated links on Clare’s Atlantic coast.

Lahinch’s story starts with a search for golfing ground among Clare’s dunes. Alexander Shaw, Richard Plummer and Black Watch officers explored the coast in 1892; the first round followed on 15 April. Old Tom Morris shaped a new layout in 1894, making the sandhills central to its character.

Alister MacKenzie was engaged in 1926, adding another influential chapter to a course now also associated with Martin Hawtree. The Old Course sits alongside the Castle Course, giving the club two distinct golfing settings. The point of a visit is the links itself: natural contours and changing directions make the day’s breeze part of the problem to solve.

Plan your round.

The Old Course’s Blue tees are par 72, 7,066 yards, Course Rating 74.7 and Slope 138. White, Green and Red tees have different ratings: choose the correct set for your handicap calculation.

The club describes the Old Course as a walking course. Its current visitor guidance requires a caddie or forecaddie within each visiting group. Confirm arrangements directly when booking.

Course Rating and Slope measure difficulty from a specific set of tees; they are separate from course style, tournament history or a golfer’s review score. Where we haven’t verified a current scorecard, we leave those numbers unstated.
